What AI can teach you, what it can’t, and why teachers still matter more than you think
You are stuck on a maths problem, your teacher has already explained it twice, and it still makes no sense. So you turn to AI, and suddenly it breaks everything down in a way that actually clicks. A dangerous thought pops up. “Why do I even need a teacher if this thing explains it better?” It feels convincing in the moment, but that idea falls apart pretty quickly.
The Important Stuff
AI works well as a personal explainer. You can ask it to simplify a concept, give more examples, or explain something in a different way until it makes sense. It does not get tired, it does not rush, and it will happily repeat itself as many times as you need. That makes it a great study partner when you are working on your own.
But AI stops at explanation. It does not see when you are confused unless you tell it. It does not notice when you are losing focus, feeling overwhelmed, or heading in the wrong direction. A teacher does. Teachers adjust how they explain things based on your reactions, ask questions that push your thinking, and guide you through learning step by step. AI gives answers. Teachers build understanding.
Now It’s Your Turn
Here is an example of a prompt you can use right now in an AI chat of your choice. Copy the prompt text below and paste it into an AI chat platform such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Claude.
I am a school student struggling to understand [insert topic]. Please explain it in a simple way first. Then give me a second explanation using a different method or example. After that, ask me two questions to check if I understand it. If I get them wrong, explain the concept again in a new way.
The Teacher Still Wins
AI can help you catch up, practise, and see things from different angles. That is valuable. But it cannot replace the guidance, experience, and real human connection a teacher brings into the classroom. Use AI to support your learning, then take what you have learned back into class and build on it with your teacher.
